of Rev:Walter E. Mill and in honor of Rev. J. Stuart Mill. The church
pews were given by families of the church.
Late
in 1976, as Christmas lights were being placed in the belfry, it was noticed
that the belfry was deteriorating and in need of repair. Upon the recommendation
of the church board and with an approving vote of the members of the
congregation, the bell and the old belfry were removed.
The
Spire
A
new belfry and steeple were installed and the original bell reinstalled. The new
spire, which could been seen for quite some distance, was dedicated October 23,
1977.
In 1978, Joy Crawford, daughter of Frances and Carl
Crawford, sketched the Macedonia Christian Church for use on the church
bulletins. This familiar sketch is still in use and has become the church
"logo" on many items and publications.
In
1979, plans were drawn and approved for the addition on the northwest corner of
Memorial Hall. Completed in 1980 by members of the congregation, this is now the
church kitchen area. Some of the workers and builders were: Bud Hiler, Mike
Cornett, G1enn Hiler and Marion Bennett.
In
the spring of 1984, Helen Oyler resigned as organist after serving as pianist
and organist for 50 years. An Appreciation Day was held in her honor in August
of 1984, with a beautiful oil painting and flowers presented to her as a token
of appreciation by her church family. Jackie Balph was appointed organist and
has also served faithfully since that time.
In
January 1984, Rev. Stuart Mill became ill. Surgery was required and he was
away from the pulpit for six weeks. Again early in 1985 he became ill and was
not able to return to the pulpit. On June 30,1985, Rev. J. Stuart Mill left us
to be with the Lord he had served so well for so many years. Memorial services
were held at the Madison Avenue Christian Church in Covington.
A memorial service forms church family at Macedonia was held at Macedonia
the following Sunday.
In
June 1985, Rev. Bill Arthur came to Macedonia as a "supply" minister
for three weeks. Those initial three weeks turned into months and years. He was
formally installed as minister on November 23, 1986.
The
death of the beloved Rev. Stuart Mill, was devastating to the Macedonia Church
family. But with a strong faith in God and the help of Rev. Arthur and his wife
Bettie, the congregation went forth knowing with God all things are possible.
In
June, 1986, "The Macedonian" church newsletter was first published by
co-editors Trudy Storch and Colleen Bradley, with Sharon Wende11ater assisting
in the monthly publication. Subsequent co-editors are Bruce and Bev Lanham, with
printing done by Tom and Doris Rye.
In
October of 1986 portraits of the late Rev. Walter E. Mill and the late Rev. J.
Stuart Mill were hung in the church foyer in tribute to their 70 years of
service to Macedonia. October 5, 1986, trees around the church were planted in
memory of Rev. J. Stuart Mill, Joe Frank and Walter Bennett.
In
March 1987, plans were presented and approved by the congregation for dividing
the original United Couples classroom into church office space, installing
dividers and tracts were to provide additional classrooms and enclosing an area
between the first and Memorial Hall for storage. This work was completed in
November of that year.
